After defeating the demon king Ravana, Rama returned to his kingdom and was welcomed by his people with great celebrations. The people lit oil lamps to light his way home and this is said to be the origin of the diyas that are lit during Diwali. The symbolism of Diwali is rich and meaningful. The oil lamps, or diyas that are lit during Diwali represent the dispelling of darkness and the triumph of light. The firecrackers that are set off during Diwali are said to ward off evil spirits. The sweets that are exchanged during Diwali symbolize the sweetness of life and the joy of sharing.
